Description
Open Season - Growing up can be a confusing journey fraught with difficult choices. Boog (Martin Lawrence) is a domesticated grizzly bear who leads a perfectly happy life inside of Park Ranger Beth's (Debra Messing) garage, but a chance meeting with an overly energetic mule deer named Elliot (Ashton Kutcher) quickly changes everything and lands Boog high in the forest a few days before the opening of hunting season. Devoid of even the most basic survival skills, Boog and Elliot stumble through the woods and find themselves at the mercy of every forest animal from skunks to chipmunks as well as an evil hunter named Shaw (Gary Sinise). After unintentionally inciting and endangering an entire forest full of clever animals, Boog and Elliot come to the realization that only by banding together do the forest animals stand a chance of outsmarting the hunters and ensuring their own survival. Open Season is the first animated film from Sony Pictures Animation, and takes its inspiration from cartoonist Steve Moore (In the Bleachers) and features animals with human-like intelligence, a vibrant colour palate, and skilled animation that makes everything from the wind blowing Boo's fur to the animals' wild trip down the falls simply breathtaking. While it doesn't quite live up to Over the Hedge, Open Season is an entertaining production that explores the difficult process of maturation, the universal need for acceptance, and the true value of friendship. --Tami Horiuchi
Reviews of Open Season [DVD] [2006]:
It's not over the hedge
The era of making animated creature features produced some fine entertainment.
However,Open Season fails to deliver the same standard of storyline or characters.
It might appeal to a younger audience.
so funny!
I love this dvd, it's so funny. The voice of Billy Connolly as a squirrel is fantastic. A wee squirrel with a Scottish accent. That alone makes it worth watching.
Great Picture Quality
Open Season is an entertaining tale, with some good dialogue. The story is basically one of a domesticated bear who has to make his way in the wilds with a bit of help from a deer with attitude. Up against him is a hunter, who is determined to stop him. Our children, and other children we know loved it - with the adults more mixed in their views.
Where it does excel however on Bluray is in picture quality. It's amazing when his owner roars at him to see his hair ruffle and part with the force of her output.
There are some interesting extras on the disc as well, particularly explaining the amount of effort that went into creating hundreds of thousands of individual hair on the animals, all acting individually.
Good fun film.
Given as a gift because we love this film, it is funny for both children and adults.
nail bitingly bad. 'nuf said
Open Season describes the word awful all too well, I mean this film is called a comedy right? well isn't a comedy supposed to be funny? The final scene that everyone's been waiting for for about an hour and a half is awful and way too short. The humans are complete wimps, they had guns? couldn't they just shoot the animals like any ordinary person would.
All-in-all this film is terrible DON'T BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
