Description

Now That's What I Call Music Vol.58 is another double-CD triumph compiling the best music from the UK pop charts. Featured here is the massive number one bust-up between Eamon, with "F**k It (I Don't Want You Back)", and Frankee, with her stinging retort "F.U.R.B. (F U Right Back)", plus chart smashes including "Hey Mama" by the Black Eyed Peas, "In the Shadows" by the Rasmus and "Air Hostess" by Busted. Other highlights include the hip-quakin' "Lola's Theme" by Shapeshifters, the booty-shakin' "Trick Me" by Kelis, the glam-stomp of "Laura" by the Scissor Sisters and the baddest-gangsterisms of Kanye West's "Through the Wire. Now: nearly 60 and still packing in the best chart hits, dancefloor fillers and indie anthems around. --Paul Eisinger

Reviews of Now That's What I Call Music Vol 58:

Now That's What I Call a British music institution
It amazes me that the 'Now' series of chart compilation albums is still going strong. I started collecting them on vinyl in the mid 1980s and have the first 12 plus 'Now 15'. The only answer is that they still sell phenomenally well, and although I don't personally like all of the tracks on this CD I can still see that it is a good reflection of the state of today's charts and pop music scene. However, with the advent of itunes and legal music sharing, I would sooner upload and purchase the tracks I like and leave the rest. At least it's a step-up from the cassette versions where you had to wait while a track you didn't like 'fast forwarded'! Not that cassettes mean much to today's generation of pop music fans. Still, for those of you who still like the satisfaction of buying a CD with a cool cover and sleeve notes, this is still a good buy.

NOW 58
Loads of top songs that should of been on this album were not included, such as D12's 'MY Band', and Ushers 'Yeah!'-saying as that single was at number one for weeks! and no sign of the basment Jaxx??
Some really good songs such as 'Matinee' by Franz Ferdinand and the Black eyed peas have there third single on the album aswell. I thought overall this album deserves 2 stars.

Snapshot of the Music of Today
If you don't like a sampling of what people are listening to today, stay away. But I like the NOW series because it allows me to have some of the hits I like without buying 12 CDs, and it introduces me to groups I haven't heard about.

O-Zone's Dragostea din tei is worth the price of the album alone, and there are a lot of other gems. Some, of course, I didn't care for. Imagine that....

It's especially good for me as a Yank to find out what's happening and popular in the UK. Thanks now series! I'll buy your others as I have this one either online, or in the shops. This one came from the Big W (Woolies) at the Forge in Glasgow!

all i can do is laugh
Well the now series has progresdsed over the years but their stegths are their weeknesses! they have tried to put some okish songs on this album i.e razorlight-the golden touch but in doing this they are gegrading an artist who would get on just fine without having chart sucess. But at least its not all trance as it used to be! in a sentance-Getting better in some ways but it never earn the right to be in my CD collection!

A summary of everything that's wrong with the music industry
I still don't know why people insist on buying these albums. Every single one of them is filled with the same generic pop of the moment, plus a song that hasn't been released but is still on a hits compilation (now tell me that the record industry isn't going to ram THAT song down your throat until it really does become a big seller). The only saving grace is when a non-mainstream song gets into the top 10, and they have to find a way to fit a song that is completely off-kilter to the rest of the album, & try to fit it between the fast food rockers & the cheeky girls. All in all, I think that if you like a song, then a: buy the single(of course i don't condone downloading!lol), or b: buy the album, as you will get to hear the songs on the next Now compilation anyway, & after 6 months, you may just listen to it again, instead of just buying the songs that the suits want you to listen to. The record companies are making a mint and a monkey out of you at the same time, and they are making even more money out of the poor sap that they roped in to sing their latest money spinner (but then that's the price of fame without talent). am I being pessimistic? maybe, but how many times have YOU listened to your hear'say album recently? think about that, whilst I go and listen to something with a bit more substance, like paint drying. My rating? one star, and that's only because I can't put a zero.
