What a read
I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is fast moving and continues the story of the Five and their hair-raising adventures at a breathless pace. I'm not a teenager (far from it) but love the way that Anthony Horowitz writes his characters and isn't afraid to give the reader some stomach churning descriptions of the killings and maimings in the book! Can't wait for the final instalment.
Anthony Horowitz could do better...
This book isn't bad in any way. The storyline is interesting, despite the odd slow moments. Things pick up towards the finale, but I agree with a Reviewer about how the book is set-up towards the final book. I found much of the storyline predictable and often drawn out.
I'm probably being quite harsh but having already read "Day of the Dragon" before Necropolis, both by Horowitz, part of the old/original Pentagram series from my local library (which is in almost the exact sotryline, but different character genders & names) the storyline was much stronger and fast-paced in the older one. And the ending was better. Give it a read!
So much better than the others
I bought the power of five series because i loved the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz. I was instantly hooked on the first book, Ravens gate. I dont usually like supernatural stuff, but this was different. It was tense, and kept you reading. The second book, Evil Star, was good, but the third, Nightrise, almost made me lose interest in the series. It was nowhere near as tense or exiting as the first.
The fourth book, however changes the negative pattern. It's the best in the series. It tells the story of Scarlett Adams, the fifth gatekeeper, ( to understand this, you have to read the rest of the series), as she is tricked by the old ones and sent to Hong Kong, where the real fun begins. Matt Freeman has problems of his own however, as well as having to find Scarlett. The characters Horowitz creates are great, and the action scenes are as good as any Alex Rider book.
If you read Nightrise, and thought it was a bit rubbish, you should definetly continue the series and read this, because it's one of the most exiting books i've ever read.
Not just for the boys
I ordered this for my 10 year old daughter who loved the Alex Rider series, but after reading reviews about 'dark' content thought I should preview it first. It is a challenging read and not for the faint hearted being very graphic in its often visceral descriptions of the battles against good and evil that take place. All of the agents of the 'Old Ones' are physically frightening - grotesque monks, zombies and shape shifters. Hong Kong is the place of nightmare and corruption. However, the plot races on, full of suspense and excitement. Scarlett is a brave and resourceful heroine - a real change from the usual bland side-kick usually found in books traditionally aimed at boys. I hadn't read the previous books, but Anthony Horowitz provides enough background detail to ensure that this book can be read on its own. We are already anticipating the final book in this series.
Great
I bought this for my grandson in Florida, he is half way through the first one, and loves it.
