Reviews of Raven's Gate (Power of Five):

Another great book
I read a review on this book and I thought I would get it. It came quickly and I have started reading it. And again, like other books written by Anthony Horowitz, it is a great book. I never get tired of his great use of language. He really is the number 1 author. The Alex Rider series was brilliant and now I'm working through another series. Anthony Horowitz never disapoints. Well done Anthony. and Well done amazon for sending the book so quickly.

Raven's Gate
I started reading this book because it was recommended by my classmates. It seemed like the sort of book a boy would read, but as I got into it I realised that it only depended on the type of books you like!

Raven's Gate is the first book in the series of Gate Keeper books by Anthony Horowitz. Its about a fourteen year old boy called Matthew Freeman (or as he likes to be called, Matt) who, without knowing until about a quarter way through, has special powers. He's arrested because he is caught stealing things from an electronics warehouse along with his friend Kelvin. Kelvin is three years older than him so Matt just goes along with whatever he does, but when Kelvin tells him what they're going to do, he doesn't feel quite right about it. And in the end, everything DOES go wrong.

Instead of staying in prison, Matt takes part in a new government project called the LEAF project. He's sent all the way to Yorkshire to be fostered. His guardian is cruel and makes him work all day on the farm. Soon he realises that something is wrong with the village and with his fosterer. Matt then learns about Raven's Gate and the Old Ones, and knows that the only person to stop Raven's Gate being opened is himself.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, even with all the deaths! That's because although the story is set for teenagers (I am eleven), the words are easy to read. I read it in five days because I couldn't put it down. My two best friends are also reading this book and they say it's brilliant, too! I look forward to buying the next book in the series, Evil Star.

I recommend this book to boys AND girls who like adventure and don't mind reading about murders. Its more for teenagers and adults but that doesn't stop children reading it!

Spooky or what?!
This book has gripped me from start to finish! When I got this out of the library, I got negative reviews from everyone. But after reading the first 2 pages I nearly shouted "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!" in the middle of class! It combines the spook of Horowitz Horror, the action of Alex Rider and the mystery of The Diamond Brothers to make a spectacular creation of wit, suspense and spooks! Horowitz at his very very very very best!

Great read
This was my first experience of Horowitz's work, and it didn't disappoint. Very easy reading, obviously aimed at the teen market, but none the less impressive for all that. A straightforward story line about a boy caught up in an evil conspiracy due to his as yet undiscovered powers. The story flows fast and it is difficult to put the book down. Thoroughly recommended.

Excellent read
I have read a few Anthony Horowitz books now (the Alex Rider series and Groosham Grange) and they are all very good. They are full of action and intrigue with never a dull moment. I would describe this book as a little darker than the others so I would recommend parents having a read before letting their kids read it. I think if you like the Harry Potter type books you will also like this series.
